The Course

The last few years has seen the introduction of new bunkers to complement the well maintained greens and fairways. In summer, firm links fairways add a new dimension to the game, with delicate approach shots required to stay on the greens.

The first hole has a generous driving area - although two well placed bunkers are there to catch out anyone who takes on the long drive to the raised bank in front of the green. The approach shot is to a long narrow sunken green. Hole number two requires a straight drive down the narrow fairway. The approach is to a narrow opening between two strategically-placed bunkers. Next up is the longest hole on the course. You need a good straight drive to allow for a fairly long second shot. With a steep slope to the front, the third green can be somewhat challenging.

The fourth is the shortest of the par fours. Here the second shot has to be accurate to hold the sloping green. The fifth - a par three of 177 yards - is one of the most difficult holes. Its hidden green is protected in front by two bunkers positioned on a large grassy mound. Out of bounds is tight to the left, so a par three is well deserved! Hole number six is another fairly long par four where a good drive is required. The second shot is blind to a small green. The seventh hole is the shortest on the course, although the green is hidden from the tee. Bunkers on either side of the hole await any wayward shot. Second time round, the seventh is replaced by the sixteenth - a much more difficult par three where a tee shot of 166 yards to a raised hidden green surrounded by grassy banking is a true test. The eighth hole is the signature hole of the course with fantastic views over the Dornoch Firth and down towards the Discovery Centre. Here, the fairway is generous, but the tricky shot is to the small raised green which is on two levels and is protected by a bunker on the right and a grassy bank to the left.

The final hole is a good test to finish your round. A straight drive is required as out of bounds is tight to the left hand side of the fairway. The second shot is to another slightly elevated, narrow green and the correct distance is vital. Many shots come up short at this hole and leaves a very tricky chip. Hope this gives you an idea of a course where, trying to pick the right shot to the different greens, provides endless entertainment.
